Portrait of Viktor N. Chulovich

Viktor Nikolaevich Chulovich (1922-1994) was a distinguished master of the Moscow School and a decorated veteran whose art was profoundly shaped by his experiences in World War II. He served as a tank commander and was awarded the Order of the Red Star for his heroism. After the war, he entered the prestigious Surikov Art Institute, graduating in 1952 from the studio of the noted history painter, Professor Pyotr Pokarzhevsky.

Chulovich became a master of the multi-figure thematic painting, specializing in epic historical narratives and scenes that captured the monumental spirit of the Soviet era. Drawing from his own life, his works often focused on military subjects and historical-revolutionary themes. His style is a powerful and dramatic form of Socialist Realism, executed with the exceptional academic skill he learned at the Surikov Institute. Though he is lauded for the strong narrative drive and dynamic compositions of his Socialist Realist works, he was also a profound landscape artist, creating with authentic, heartfelt conviction, as you can see in the paintings in our collection.

The legacy of Viktor Chulovich is that of a major painter of the Soviet historical school. A regular participant in All-Union art exhibitions, his work is held in the permanent collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum, confirming his national importance. For the collector, acquiring a work by Chulovich is to own a powerful and authentic historical document. It is a piece of art created by a highly skilled, Surikov-trained master whose status as a decorated war veteran lends his work a profound and undeniable credibility.
