Gavril Gorelov

Gavriil Nikitich Gorelov (1880-1966) was a decorated master of Russian Realism, a Stalin Prize laureate, an Honored Artist of the RSFSR, and a full member of the USSR Academy of Arts. His artistic lineage is impeccable; after studying at the Penza Art School under K.A. Savitsky, he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he was a student in the workshop of the legendary master Ilya Repin. An early member of the Peredvizhniki (The Wanderers), Gorelov was steeped in the great 19th-century tradition of psychological realism.

Gorelov was a master of portraiture and historical painting, and his style reflects the powerful, dramatic realism of his teacher, Repin. This mastery is on full display in the work from our collection, "Portrait of Doctor Pavlov". The painting is a masterful character study, capturing not just the physical likeness of the sitter but also a sense of his intellect, dignity, and inner life. Gorelov’s long and celebrated career was marked by the highest state honors and significant international recognition. He was awarded a scholarship to travel and study in Germany, France, and Italy (1911-1914) and won a Gold Medal at the International Art Exhibition in Munich (1909) and a Silver Medal in Paris (1937). His works are held in the permanent collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum.
