Portrait of Alexanderliech Fomkin

A pivotal figure in the Moscow art establishment, Alexanderliech Fomkin (1924-1999) shaped generations of artists as the Chair of the painting department at the Surikov Institute. His artistic education began at the Surikov's preparatory school and was interrupted by World War II, during which he and other promising students were evacuated to Bashkeria for their safety. After the war, he returned to the Surikov Institute, graduating from the studio of P. Kotov in 1950 and completing a post-graduate degree in 1955. Later he became a People's Painter of Russia and an Honored Artist.

Fomkin’s career was defined by his immense influence as both a master painter and a top educator. His own work exemplifies the lyrical and technically brilliant realism of the Moscow School. In his painting from our collection, "February in Bujarovo," he masterfully captures the unique, low light of a winter sun. The scene is a quintessential Russian village moment, rendered with thick, textural brushwork that gives the snow and the sunlit walls of the house a tangible presence. The painting is a prime example of his ability to find a quiet, profound poetry in the authenticity of rural life.

The legacy of Alexander Fomkin is that of a top-tier master of the Soviet academic tradition. His role as an "Official Critic of Art and Advisor of Diverse Russian Museums" confirms his authority in the nation's cultural life. His work was included in major international exhibitions, such as a 1995 show in Madrid, Spain, and is held today in private collections in Germany, France, England, and the USA. For the collector, owning a painting by Fomkin is to acquire a work by a "People's Painter" who was not only a brilliant artist but a key figure who taught and influenced the future of Russian art.
